Weingut Malans
In Malans our vineyards consist of 6 different pieces
of land, together making up four hectares of grapes.
The red grape varieties we have planted are Pinot Noir,
Merlot and recently a little Malbec. Our white varieties
are Riesling x Sylvaner, Pinot Gris, Gewürztraminer
and some Chardonnay.
When, during our first trip to New Zealand (1990),
we told somebody, how "big" our winery
in Switzerland was, we only reaped a pityingly and
incredulous smile. At this time nobody in New Zealand
would have even bothered starting a vineyard this
size.
Of course this was for different reasons. The
main one was, that in those years existed a huge
difference
in vineyard management and caring between Switzerland
and New Zealand. In New Zealand nearly everything
was done by machine, even pruning and harvesting
- which is still today in a lot of places the case
-. The enormous effort in the vineyard we have been
applying in Switzerland for many years seemed to
the people of New Zealand unnecessary and incomprehensible.
